When is competition valuable?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 03, 2008:
The Olympic creed states: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
I would like to see the incorporation of this creed more often in sport and in other aspects of our lives. Seeing the athletes participating in all the events is an inspiration of how focus, determination, and drive can lead toward doing their best. In the friendly spirit of competition we achieve great things together.
